(by Katrin Berkenkopf in Cologne)

Lloyd Werft has received an order for two 11,000 dwt multipurpose vessels, socalled dock ships, representing a combined value of about €100m ($126m). The vessels will be delivered in January and June 2008, the Bremerhaven shipbuilder said. They are destined for K/S Combi Lift, a German-Danish joint venture involving Bremen shipowner Harren & Partner. “Combi Lift can further extend its competence in the project shipping business and transport cargoes of even larger volume,” Lloyd Werft and Harren & Partner said in a joint statement.

“The dock ships are capable of transporting complete of transporting completely assembled cargo units, which make overland transportation impossible due to their extreme dimensions or weight.”

An example could be passenger barges of up to 135 m, which will fit onto the ships.

“Both vessels are equipped for the operation of sophisticated project employment and especially accommodate the wishes of the shipping industry to transport completely mounted units which are continuously increasing in size,” said the firms. Because of their flexibility, they could also carry bulk cargo or up to 1,500 teu.

The two ships will each be equipped with two cranes of 350 tonnes and one of 200 tonnes lifting capacity.
