Jumboisation of four ships

Dutch reefer shipping giant Seatrade has placed a major four-ship lengthening contract with Germany’s Lloyd Werft, Bremerhaven, one of the biggest ship conversion projects awarded in the past year. The work involves the jumboisation by 15.7 m of the company’s four Italian-flag, 174 m reefers, Cala Palma, Cala Pedra, Cala Pino and Cala Pula, all built by the Ancona yard of Italy’s Fincantieri between 1999-2000.

Work on the project will start this June and be completed by August, with each vessel spending 20 days in one of the yard’s floating docks for the lengthening operation which will take place via the ‘dry Method’. This means that each 17,000m³ capacity vessel will be cut in two at its broadest part, with the forebody being moved forward by use of hydraulic jacks, then the new two-part 510 tonne midbody section will be lifted into place in the floating dock. The all three sections of the ships will be joined together.
